Motivations & Values – Fit Interview
"Why consulting?", "Why our firm?", "Tell me about yourself" — how to build a compelling and authentic personal story.
"Tell me about yourself" – 2-Minute Structure
[Who] My name is Minh Tran, a final-year Business student at RMIT Vietnam, specializing in Marketing and Finance.
[Journey] Over the past two years, I've worked at the intersection of data and brand strategy—first as a marketing intern at Nestlé Vietnam, where I supported the launch of a plant-based product line, and then as the student VP of Marketing at RMIT's Business Club, where I managed a team of 14 and a $10,000 annual budget.
[Achievement] In my Nestlé internship, I led a consumer insight study that identified an underserved Gen Z segment, which directly influenced our packaging redesign and contributed to a 22% sales uplift in Q3 2024.
[Why Here] I'm now applying to [Company]'s Management Trainee Program because of the unique combination of 4-rotation cross-functional exposure and the specific mentorship by senior leadership—I've spoken with two current MTs, and that's exactly the growth environment I'm looking for at this stage.
"Why This Firm?" – Framework & Anti-patterns
Strong "Why Firm" Answers
- Specific program/rotation structure you've researched (e.g., "18-month rotation across 4 BUs")
- Alumni conversations: "I spoke with [Name], a 2023 MT – they described..."
- Specific recent business initiative or expansion you follow
- Culture differentiation: NOT "your values" – SPECIFIC: "The case-based onboarding in first 90 days..."
- Geographic footprint or product portfolio relevance to your personal interest
Anti-patterns to Avoid
- "I admire your company culture and core values"
- "You are a leader in the industry" (says nothing)
- "The opportunity for personal and professional growth"
- "I want to learn from the best" (too generic)
- Memorized answer that sounds like the website About page
